DTC    P0046    Turbocharger / Supercharger Boost Control Solenoid Circuit Range / Performance

for Preparation Click here

DESCRIPTION

The DC motor is used to operate the nozzle vane of the turbocharger. The nozzle vane opens and closes to change the velocity of exhaust gas in order to control the turbo pressure. The ECM varies the duty-cycle of the DC motor in accordance with the driving condition.
If the nozzle vane is stuck closed (DC motor stuck off), the drivability may deteriorate at wide open throttle. If the nozzle vane is stuck open (DC motor stuck on), the drivability may deteriorate at intermediate throttle or the engine power may be insufficient.

DTC Detection Condition
Trouble Area
All of following condition are met:
  1. Engine running
  2. Depress and release accelerator pedal
    (DC motor varies)
Either of following conditions is met:
(1 trip detection logic)
  1. (a) DC motor duty is 88% or more for 0.5 seconds.
    (MIL is not illuminated)
  2. (b) Remains condition (a) for 1 minute or more after 20 seconds elapsed from condition (a) detected.
    (MIL is illuminated)
  3. (c) When condition (a) is detected 10 times with 20 seconds intervals.
    (MIL is illuminated)
  4. (d) Short in DC motor (turbocharger sub-assembly) circuit
    (MIL is illuminated)
  1. Open or short in DC motor (turbocharger sub-assembly) circuit
  2. Turbocharger sub-assembly (DC motor)
  3. Nozzle vane position sensor (turbocharger subassembly)
  4. ECM
Ignition switch from ON to off
VN turbocharger position does not move smoothly within predetermine time of ignition switch being turned from ON to off (while ECD relay is ON) (Determination of a malfunction is conducted within a given time after the ignition switch is turned from ON to off. If a malfunction is detected within this time, the MIL is illuminated and a DTC is set when the ignition switch is next turned to ON)
(MIL is not illuminated)
(1 trip detection logic)
  1. Open or short in DC motor (turbocharger sub-assembly) circuit
  2. Turbocharger sub-assembly (DC motor)
  3. Nozzle vane position sensor (turbocharger subassembly)
  4. ECM

INSPECTION PROCEDURE

NOTICE:
When replacing the ECM, the ECM needs Registration and Initialization (Click here).

HINT:
  1. When the ECM must be replaced, before replacing the ECM, perform the "Learning Values Save" function using the intelligent tester. Then after installing the new ECM, perform all of the initializations/registrations for the "Learning Values Write" function by following the instructions shown on the tester display.
  2. Read freeze frame data using the intelligent tester. Freeze frame data records the engine condition when malfunctions are detected. When troubleshooting, freeze frame data can help determine if the vehicle was moving or stationary, if the engine was warmed up or not, and other data from the time the malfunction occurred.

1.CHECK ANY OTHER DTCS OUTPUT (IN ADDITION TO DTC P0046)
  1. Connect the intelligent tester to the DLC3.

  1. Turn the ignition switch to ON and turn the tester on.

  1. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / DTC.

  1. Read DTCs.
